Sun Shenanigans

I came across an article from Stanford University News, that indicates radioactive decay rates may not be the universal constant they are believed to be. In fact, they may not only vary, they may actually be influenced by our own sun.

Scientific Notation

I haven’t had much time to post of late, preferring to spend it reading a new series.   I did see this article today about the “underwater oil plume” that scientists have confirmed to exist from that BP well which I felt deserved a quick post. The sheer scope of the oil plume boggles the mind.  [...]

spam, spam, eggs and spam

No, this isn’t some post about a Monty Python skit.  This is about spam with a lower-case “s.”  The kind that seems to flood every e-mail in-box across the planet, and of late, this backwater blog site. I understand that most of the spam posting is automated, but still, at some point some human somewhere [...]

Tomorrow Is Today

I came across an article yesterday on IBM’s new supercomputer, Watson.  This computer has been trained to play Jeopardy!.  Yes, you read that correctly, it can play the TV “phrase your answer in the form of a question” game.   And it plays it pretty well for a machine.

In which we attend w00tstock 2.1

This last Saturday evening was w00tstock 2.1 at the Aladdin Theater in Portland, Oregon.   We drove up from Salem and fought the Portland traffic and managed to find a parking spot close enough that we didn’t need a Sherpa and support crew with about a half hour to spare. The post icon this time is [...]

Protesting about cuts and taxes the government has no choice but to make, without offering some other type of solution, is like demonstrating against cancer, or protesting tornadoes.

How much is enough?

With the government spending money like a meth addict with a stolen credit card, I’ve seen all sorts of predictions one way or another as to how this will all turn out. One side says the unicorns and rainbows are on the way, and just the “rich” will pay for it.  The other side says [...]

Changes Book Signing

Book number twelve of the Dresden Files series came out this last Tuesday.  And, I must admit, the book is aptly named. Jim Butcher was in Beaverton last night at Powell’s books for a book signing.   The event was a real treat (and my first book signing) and a great time was had by all.

Talk. Like Shatner. Day. *sharp inhale*

Just a quick post to wish ol’ Bill a happy birthday today! . Happy Birthday Bill!  . And since it’s his birthday, it’s also the Second Annual International Talk Like William Shatner day (some NSFW language).   So don’t forget, let’s all talk like the Shat.

I’m Just A Bill

It looks like the national health-care debacle is finally coming to a head, they’re pushing to have a vote (and I use that term very loosely) for this Sunday. After watching this process for the last few months, I’ve come the conclusion that I never really knew how our government runs.  To quote Lily Tomlin, [...]
