The Daily Bizarre

Just when you thought you've seen it all.

Captain Phil

Phil Harris of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch program died recently.  The Internet has been full of supportive posts to his family so I won’t go into detail here.  Although, if you would like to express your condolences to his family, there is a thread over on Discovery’s forum where you may do so (it’s up to almost 400 pages as I write this).

What prompted me to post here today, is a remembrance thread that Mike “Mr. Voice Over” Rowe from Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs  made on his MikeRoweWorks.com site.

We Choose Easy

I read today that President Obama submitted his budget and I was saddened to see that he cut NASA’s funding for the return to the moon.

I understand that the country’s out of money, and that there are programs that benifit other things but I think people tend to underestimate the science return that NASA gives us, let alone the much-needed spark of imagination and wonder that our current crop of children so desperately need.

Declare The Pennies On Your Eyes

Congratulations OR-tards, you’ve passed two new tax measures in one special election!  That’s something of a record here in Oregon as traditionally we’ve been vehemently anti-tax.

I wish I could say that I was surprised by the fact the tax measures passed, but with the pro-tax camp spending nearly 7 million dollars on advertising (almost half-again as much as the other side) it wasn’t much in doubt.  They know the bulk of the sheeple believe what they see on TV, and this election proves it.

Holiday Roundup

I’ve been busy with real work of late, so I haven’t had much time to blog here.  Not that there hasn’t been a-plenty to blog about with this health care crap going on still.

First and foremost, I want to wish a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the five or six of you that read this blog.  I hope your new year is better than the last.

I’ve decided to just post a few things that have piqued my interest lately with no particular rhyme or reason.

Wheel In The Sky

Wheel In The Sky Keep On TurningNo, this post isn’t some type of Journey retrospective.  It’s about some odd event that occurred over the skies of Norway last night.

Details are still rather sketchy at this point but that something odd happened cannot be denied.  Something odd enough to perk even my overly-jaded interest.

Freedom of Choice

ChooseNow that the national health care bill has passed the House, it can move on to the Senate where the real in-fighting and back-biting can commence.

Two posts in a row about the national health care debate?  I know, I know, but there is one apect to this malfuction that really disturbs me and I don’t see enough people talking about it so I thought I’d throw in my two cents in the pointless hope that some lost soul might encounter this blog and a debate might be sparked.

Why?

National HealthcareThe national health care debate rages on in Washington.  The mud flying fast and furious from both sides as usual.  Scare tactics such as “death panels” from one side to threats of the impending collapse of the civilized world if nothing is done right now from the other side.

I’ve generally avoided blogging on this because there’s enough e-crap written about it out there to keep Evelyn Wood busy for the next decade.  I’m making this post, however, because in all the debate I see about this health care, I’m not seeing one very simple question about this whole process.  [Read the rest of this entry...]

Giant Brass Balls

AahhhnoldI’ve posted here before about the exploits of California’s current governor, and I haven’t changed my opinion of him.

I came across this story today, about a note the Governator tacked on to a bill he refused to sign.  The note itself is not extraordinary, it’s the sub-context of the note that is important.  Reading between the lines if you will.

Preserve Your Capital

Fisrt National Bank of MatressNot being one to jump on the economic doom and gloom bandwagon (like there’s any room left on that wagon anyway) I’ve avoided blogging about the current economic mess.

Having said that, I came across a story that I felt needed more coverage than what I’ve seen on the news lately, or anwhere else for that matter.

Where have all the folk singers gone?

Mary TraversYesterday’s passing of Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary fame saddened me.  I know she had been sick for some time now so I am glad her suffering at least is at an end now.  Having witnessed several family members waste away from cancer, my heart-felt sympathies go out to her family and friends.

She was an accomplished singer and songwriter and I enjoyed many of her songs, some of the better ones never getting any airplay even when they were new.  There are plenty of tribute blog posts and obituaries out there so I won’t contribute to that; besides I doubt I could do that and keep a dry eye.
